CLEVELAND- To say that J.R. Smith is a model professional athlete is a severe understatement. J.R. has been known to not take his job seriously at times. Just last week Smith had seemingly taken a play off during the Cleveland Cavaliers match up with the Milwaukee Bucks to say hello to Jason Terry. J.R.’s antics have put him in a lot of hot water over the course of his entire NBA career, but none more so than his latest flub. The Cavaliers were ready to host the Miami Heat Friday night in Cleveland when J.R. was nowhere to be found. Cavs coach Tyronn Lue was asked at half time about Smith’s absence. Lue said, “I expected him to be here. This kind of behavior cannot be tolerated.” J.R. did not show up until the waning seconds of the fourth quarter. A reporter here at Sports Starch was able to catch up with him after the game.
A winded J.R. explained, “I know I let my team down but I was in line at Toys R Us. Family comes first, I just had to get a Hatchimal. Those things sell out real quick and I couldn’t miss out again.”
Smith revealed that he was in line for close to 4 hours. When he realized it was either make it to the game or finally purchase a Hatchimal, Smith said the decision was easy, “You play 82 games in the season, and that’s not even counting playoffs. There wasn’t a question in my mind.” Then, when questioned on who the toy was for Smith replied, “Nah. No one. I got this for me. When it hatches I’m gonna name it Jeffy.”
Smith’s teammates seemed to have mixed reactions to his absence. Lebron was quoted saying, “[Smith] has got to show up and do his job. He’s supposed to be someone I can count on but I was forced to flip the water bottle by myself out there. Unacceptable.” Kevin Love was a little more understanding of Smith’s situation. “Have you seen those things? They are adorable. I haven’t been able to get one yet, but Jeffy is the s***,” stated Love.
Smith was seen exiting the coach’s office with Jeffy in tote. One source stated that Smith had made Lue the Hatchimal’s godfather in hopes to be forgiven for missing the game. It has since been revealed that Smith will start their next game and a special seat will be available on the Cavs bench for Jeffy.
